Hyde Abbey

Winchester, Hampshire
for Winchester City Council,
2001 - 2006

A new public park created on the site of Hyde Abbey church, the burial place of King Alfred and his family.

The design was brought forward with local artists and residents, the Hampshire Gardens Trust, Friends of Hyde Abbey and built on the former leisure centre car park with Winchester City Council. The money for the project was raised locally by the Friends, the Council and the Heritage Lottery Fund.

The first phase included 3 metre high hollies in stainless steel frames to echo the pillars of the Saxon church and 3 metre long Yorkstone ledger stones carved with Saxon crosses to mark the graves of the King, his wife and his son.
